Kestrel EMT 2026.5 Released
A new version of Kestrel EMT and KPlot has been published here. See the changes below or visit the Kestrel EMT page for more information.
Learn more about the changes below:
Kestrel EMT
- Added Grid Source Block - 3 phase thevenin equivalent block with useful inputs for grid interconnection studies (i.e. short circuit ratio (SCR))
- Fixed issue where certain voltage and current sources (such as the 1.2/50 8/20 waves) would cause the and steady-state solution to fail
- Added IEEE/CIGRE .dll PV inverter example, based on the code from the 2023 EPRI paper “Code Based Generic Inverter Based Resource Model”
KPlot
- Added ability set plot legend position or disable altogether.
We’ve included a new IBR demo case with this version of Kestrel EMT. The “pv_ibr.kcf” case includes a real-code generic inverter based resource model in a single machine infinite bus case. This configuration is typical for EMT interconnection studies using manufacturer inverter models.

In this model you can see how the average value inverter model initializes and responds to a single line to ground fault:

To open this case press the “Example Files” button on the main ribbon in Kestrel EMT, then copy the “pv_ibr.kcf” and “gfm_gfl_ibr2.dll” to a working folder elsewhere on the system. From there you may open the case and run it to see how the inverter response to the fault condition.
